What We Learned From Three Major Giving Days
Giving Days are like snowflakes: no two are the same.
Every institution has its own set of priorities, its own fundraising strategies, and most importantly, its own unique donor community. In applying strategies related to their varied priorities, institutions are able to find new and innovative ways to structure each giving day and engage with their donor community.
These innovations not only help institutions accomplish their goals, but are also helping inform our strategy at ScaleFunder to boost the results for all of our partners. Over the next month, we’re sharing some of the lessons we’ve learned throughout our 2016 spring giving day season.
Lesson One: Major Gifts Have a Major Role to Play!
UCSB’s inaugural Give Day taught us that major gifts definitely make the difference in any large-scale giving event. Through pre-planned major gifts as matches and challenges, to large offline seed gifts, and even a single gift in excess of $1,000,000, UCSB was able to build a comprehensive major gift protocol to better engage with major donors.
Lesson Two: Matches & Challenges Energize Donors!
UT Austin is no stranger to giving days, running their third “40 for 40” campaign in April of 2016. One of the key things that UT Austin does to engage their donor community is unique matches and challenges, as well as “power hours” for donations that energize and excite their community. By adding friendly competition and gift matching to their giving day, UT Austin had their most successful “40 for 40” yet and boosted excitement about giving back!
Lesson Three: Affinity Giving Drives Results!
At UCSC, everything is done a little differently, which is why it is no surprise that their “Game on Give on” giving day was highly unique. By hyper-targeting donors through the creation of sub-groups within their giving day support areas, UCSC was able to truly engage with their donor affinities. Whether that was to support the Banana Slug athletics teams or a specific research project, allowing donors the freedom of choice drove high traffic and big results in UCSC’s first-ever giving day.
